About

About

The annual Ghana Green Building Summit (GGBS) was created in 2017 to evaluate Ghana’s green building needs and tailor local solutions in design, finance, and policy. In the past five editions, prior speakers have included ministers of state, policymakers, mayors of other African cities, etc. GGBS was awarded the Green Event of the Year at the 2019 Ghana Property Awards. Along our journey, we have also partnered with the IFC EDGE program to curate student design competitions and capacity-building workshops for built industry professionals. Some important guests at our co-curated events have included the First Lady of Ghana as well as the British High Commissioner, amongst many others.

Our primary objective at inception was mainly thought leadership, which sparked conversations on opportunities and challenges in developing a green building market in Ghana with special focus on attainment of SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11, & 13. Our objectives have since expanded to include development of green project pipeline, youth and women capacity building, technical and financial support for green innovators and SMEs.

In line with these growth objectives, the Summit is taking on a wider scope to encompass all other elements that complement buildings and the full sustainability value chain for 2025 and beyond now as Ghana Green Summit.

GGBS 2025

To tackle climate change and its negative impacts, world leaders at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP) in Paris signed an agreement that commits all nation parties to the agreement to contribute to the solution (i.e climate action). Each nation, Ghana inclusive, have a set of actions, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), to support the global effort. Key to reducing GHGs are buildings and cities which reportedly contribute as high as between 40- 80% respectively. Amongst Ghana’s key actions in the built environment and cities are:

  • To achieve citywide resilient infrastructure planning for climate change adaptation

  • To increase low-carbon electricity generation and promote clean rural households lighting leading to a combined emission reduction

  • To promote energy efficiency in homes, industry and commerce leading to emission reduction

The 2025 edition of the Ghana Green Summit seeks to support the realization of the above NDCs, with a focus on buildings and cities. These interventions will be made by sparking policy change, rethinking building and city infrastructure, design and material use, energy & water efficiency, innovation and technology as well as finance. Ghana requires between US$ 9.3 and US$ 15.5 billion of investment to implement its NDCs, hence green finance will be a key session at the summit. Sessions will be delivered via thought provoking panel discussions, presentations, demonstrations, and workshops.

Why a hybrid summit?

The saying “never waste a good crises” best applies to our 2020 virtual edition, which though borne out of the COVID-19 pandemic, showed us that we could expand our outreach virtually.

What was intended to be a Ghanaian and to some extent an African event extended far and beyond Africa as we were joined by attendees from as far as Australia through Japan, Bangladesh, Canada, USA to Zanzibar, a total of 27 countries joined the Summit in 2020.

So, while we are now better equipped to manage an in-person event through stringent COVID 19 protocols, we will combine that with streaming to our international audience in our first hybrid event, offering a delightful experience to both audiences.

2025 Theme

The 2025 edition of the Ghana Green Building Summit will be heavy on highlighting innovative green solutions within the built environment and sustainability value chain. The Summit will thus offer patrons an opportunity to experience and re-imagine these solutions in their residential, retail, commercial, and public spaces. This has inspired this year’s theme: Re-Imagining buildings and cities for economic and social prosperity

The engagements will be delivered via four different tracks as follows: Buildings, Cities, Finance and ESG. An exciting addition is the out-of- town networking day in an easy atmosphere where new connections and collaborations are formed and new business leads are generated. Join us!
